The Level Up to “I AM”

From To-Do to I AM: Why Your Daily Goals Are Exhausting You

For years, my Daily Goals list looked like everyone else’s.

Workout. Make money. Read. Pray. Advertise the business. Give myself time.

It was responsible. It was productive. It was also slowly killing my momentum.

Because every single item started with a verb that said: You are not enough yet.

Workout — because your body isn’t enough.
Make money — because your resources aren’t enough.
Pray — because you need to ask for something you don’t have.

I was living in the perpetual future tense. I call it the Hustle Grammar.

Last March, I stood in front of that same whiteboard and crossed it all out. Not because the actions were wrong, but because the identity underneath them was unsustainable.

I replaced them with what I now call Sustainable Goals. And the biggest shift was this line:

Prayer is Gratitude, Choice, and “I AM”

Let me break down the practice, because it’s become the core of how I coach.

Daily Goals of Doing

Most of us write goals as tasks. “Workout” is a task. It’s external, passable or fail-able. You either did it or you didn’t. And if you didn’t, you get to collect evidence that you are undisciplined. Do this long enough and your daily goals become a daily indictment.

Some of us get comfortable with this because it fits the “tough love” history of trauma we experienced at another’s hands. Another way exists that doesn’t have you wrestling with your thoughts and negotiating with your overly-critical mind. You can gain freedom, self-love, and inspiration that gets you organized, capable, and consistent.

The Being Invitations

The sustainable version isn’t softer. It’s more honest.

“Breathe & Move” you can do in grief, in joy, in a hotel room, in a hospital waiting room. It’s not dependent on equipment. It invites you to be a person who lives in their body.

“Invite Abundance” instead of “Make Money” changes the posture. Making is pushing. Inviting is preparing. You clean the house before the guests arrive. You clarify your value, you create space, you keep your word. Abundance has always needed an invitation, not a lasso.

“Invite Community by Contributing” instead of “Advertising” killed my marketing anxiety. I stopped trying to get attention and started trying to give value. Contribution is sustainable. Advertising to survive is not.

The I AM Activity

This is where the daily practice leveled up.

I stopped writing “Prayer” as a line item and rewrote it as an equation: Prayer is Gratitude, Choice, and I AM.

Gratitude is not a feeling you wait for. It’s a choice you make. And that choice is an identity declaration.

That’s the I AM activity.

Every morning, before I look at what I have to DO, I declare who I AM.

Not who I want to be someday. Who I AM when I’m at my most grounded.

Instead of: “I need to work out.”
I AM: “I am a person who breathes and moves with intention.”
Instead of: “I need to make money.”
I AM: “I am a person who invites abundance by serving deeply.”
Instead of: “I need to give myself time.”
I AM: “I am a person who enjoys my time. My time is valuable because I am in it.”

Do you feel the difference? The first is debt. The second is ownership.

Neuroscience calls this self-priming. Scripture calls it calling those things which be not as though they were. Actors call it playing the truth of the scene. Coaches call it pivoting.

When you live from I AM, your actions stop being performance and start being proof. You don’t move to become worthy. You move because you ARE the kind of person who moves.

Your daily goals shouldn’t be a list that beats you up. They should be a mirror that calls you back.

So grab a dry-erase marker. Look at your own list.

What needs to be crossed out — not because it’s bad, but because the language is keeping you in hustle?

And what sustainable truth wants to take its place?

Don’t write what you have to do tomorrow. Write who you already are when you’re at your best. Then let tomorrow be the experiment that proves it true.

That’s the level up.
Your I AM is not arrogance. It’s assignment.
