2026 meta-research is definitive: AI coaching chatbots now equal human coaches on structured goal attainment. Yet CHROs are slashing coaching budgets while engagement scores drop. Your managers hit every OKR the bot sets, then quit.

The friction isn’t accuracy. It’s alliance architecture.

The 2026 Shift

The data converged fast. Terblanche et al.’s 2022 RCT tracked employees for 10 months: AI coaches matched humans on process-based tasks — accountability, habit tracking, progress nudges. A 2024 Springer chapter confirmed it: AI coaches rival humans when goals are narrow and theory-driven.
